SHUAIBU COMBS SOUTH WEST; INTERCEPTS GOODS/DRUGS WORTH N556.4 MILLION IN FOUR WEEKS

Spectacular seizures worth more than N556.4 million were made in the last four weeks by the Joint Border Patrol Team in the South West zone.

Its Co-ordinator , Deputy Comptroller Mohammed Salisu Shuaibu told journalists in Lagos today that 816 bags of foreign parboiled rice of 50 kg each were amongst the goods intercepted by his men in the period under consideration.

Others include;; 816 Bags of foreign parboiled rice (50kg each), 285 Bales of used clothes, (e) 674kg of Cannabis Sativa, 61 Jumbo sacks of used shoes, 802 Jerry cans containing premium motor spirit (25 Litres each), 8 Units of used vehicles

In combating illegal migration across the international border, we arrested 34 illegal migrants and handed over the same to the Nigeria Immigration Service for onward prosecution.

He said in their commitment to significantly distort the trade supply chain of illicit drugs, Joint Border Patrol Sector 2, intercepted 674kg of Cannabis Sativa at Idi-iroko, and Imeko areas of Ogun State during routine patrol operations.

The effect of having this quantity of drugs in circulation has devastating effects on individuals, communities and society as a whole. Illicit drug use is often linked to organized crime, violence, banditry, kidnapping and health-related issues.

According to him, in their steadfast commitment to combating smuggling activities, we were protecting Nigeria’s economy and ensuring national security. We intensified patrols, sustained surveillance activities and enhanced intelligenae gathering withinthe border corridors, which disrupted Smuggling networks.

While acting on the core mandate of the Joint Border Patrol Team, which is to combat smuggling and illegal migration; these two criminal activities are capable of undermining our economic growth, fueling insecurity, and exploiting vulnerable citizens.

The narcotics will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for investigation and further actions.
