Running the Federal Operations Unit ( FOU)A is not a tea party. It is the flagship command of the Customs service in the western zone.
The extensive nature of the Unit’s coverage makes it unique, the Controller in charge of the Unit, Compt Gambo Aliyu disclosed to This Page Newspaper in chat.
Covering more than 76,000 square kilometers in mass and 753 square kilometers coast line, Aliyu said its interdictions, with a one-stop system has reduced workload as well as stemmed the incidence of unwholesome smuggling.
The Controller disclosed that with the introduction of its geospatial system, the service is now fully technology-driven, describing the coming of the current Comptroller General, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, PhD, MFR, as a major boost , having digitized the operations of the service.
Aliyu pointed out that the Comptroller General has injected a lot of positive changes into the system since he came on board. ‘His programmes and policies have catapulted the service into enviable heights’
According to him, the swiftness and ease of doing business, geared towards meeting cardinal objectives of the service and protecting the Nigerian society through interception of illicit substances remain unprecedented. Elucidating on the feats of the current management, he deposed that the customs boss has achieved all his mandates.
According to him, revenue generation remains high and unprecedented, state-of-the-art innovations in provision of infrastructure, seizures of dangerous arms and ammunition as well as illicit drugs, such as tramadol, cocaine, cannabis Indica and sativa with several brands of Canadian and Ghanaian loud.
Trade facilitation/ease of doing business, he noted, is second to none, while welfare of the workforce remains a priority to the Comptroller General.
Compt Aliyu pointed out that officers of the FOU’A’ are now more than ever well motivated , encouraged, and even provided with a brand new office Headquarters with modern facilities to work with.
Though, he said, his officers have done marvelously well, but like Oliver Twist, he expects more work and seizures from them, following the new impetus given to the Unit. In what he would love to be remembered for, any day he exits the Unit, Aliyu said;
‘I would love to be remembered that we have worked as a team, delivered the mandate of the Customs, protected the Nigerian society against criminality, while securing the nation. Whoever mounts here after me is not starting from ground zero’ On his unparalleled humility; Aliyu said that’s the crux of human relations;
‘There must be an element of civility, everybody’s views must count, team work is it! He said, he engages a lot in lecturing his officers, noting ‘we should be public servants and not subjective to the public’
Since Compt Gambo Aliyu mounted the dais at the FOU’A’ in the last five months, he has made unique seizures of prohibited items worth more than N10 billion, and he said it is not yet over.
