PASSPORT FEES DOUBLE; AS IMMIGRATION SERVICE APPROVES FRESH HIKE TO N100,000 & N200,000

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a fresh upward review of the cost of obtaining the Nigerian Standard Passport, effective September 1, 2025, in a move expected to further tighten household spending pressures.

In a statement signed by Service Public Relations Officer ACI AS Akinlabi on Thursday, the NIS said the new fee regime will apply only to applications processed within Nigeria.

Under the revised structure, the 32-page passport with a five-year validity will now cost N100,000, while the 64-page passport with a 10-year validity has been raised to N200,000.

The agency clarified that application fees for Nigerians in the diaspora remain unchanged at $150 for the 32-page booklet (five years) and $230 for the 64-page booklet (10 years).

According to the Immigration Service, the hike is aimed at maintaining the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport while ensuring service accessibility for citizens.

This marks the second consecutive increase following the August 2024 adjustment, which took effect from September 1 of that year, according to Global Financial Digest.

Then, fees were raised from N35,000 to N50,000 for the 32-page passport and from N70,000 to N100,000 for the 64-page booklet.

The NIS had argued that the previous adjustments were necessary to sustain production quality, improve security features, and enhance service delivery.

The latest review comes as Nigerians continue to grapple with rising inflation, currency depreciation, and higher service costs, further heightening pressure on consumer spending and travel affordability.
