COMPTROLLERS OLOMU, NNADI SQUARE UP TO JACK UP CUSTOMS REVENUE
The two major seaport commands in Lagos—Apapa and Tin can island are not smiling with anyone when it comes to revenue generation as they are expected to rake in a larger chunk of the Customs N5.1 trillion target for this year.
To show seriousness in their approach to plug revenue leakages, they have hit the ground running with ambitious daily targets of between 7.5 billion and N9 billion respectively with their various APMs put on their toes more than ever before.
A comparative analysis of revenue collection at the Tin Can Island Port command shows an impressive performance of N472,579,447,344.22 collected between January and May 26th this year, as against N209,855,510,017.19 last year, indicating a 225.19 percent increase.
Between May 1st and May 26th alone, Tin Can generated N72,938,285,717.00 as against N46,485,639,728.79 in same period last year— a 156.90 percent increase.
In March this year, it made its highest monthly revenue of N115,108,066,256.20 in the last five months, as against N42,803,114,544.1@. In February, it generated N100,399,354,887.71 while in April, it made N95,703,614,360.55, a 241.82 percent jerk from that of last year which stood at N41,518,738,649.09.
Compt Dera Nnadi, mni said the service is taking its core mandates of revenue, enforcement/seizures and trade facilitation very seriously.
He has intercepted four containers of drugs ( heroine and cocaine) very recently, sending a signal to fraudulent importers that Tin can island port command remains a no- go area for bad jobs.
Meanwhile, of the N350,951,281,942.10 remitted into the federal government coffers between May 1 and May 23 this year, no less than N129,871,701,328.00 was generated by the Premier command Apapa.
Apapa command’s revenue feat represents 37 per cent of the total revenue generated by all commands nationwide in the period under review. For instance, on May 23rd alone, Apapa command under Dr Olomu made a significant leap with N9,325,677,320.00.
Total SGD’s captured totalled 267, while SGD’s with duty paid is 99 with a balance of 168 unpaid SGD’s. The two major commands are instrumental to realizing the huge revenue target given the customs service by the federal government. Its target this year is within the N5.1 trillion mark.
The Area Controllers of the grade A commands have made assurance that they are determined towards nearing or overshooting this benchmark.
